33 years of attracting returning young professionals through this premier employment opportunity funded locally

Labor Commissioner Gary Molloy announces that the Department of Labor is now accepting applications for the 2022 Labor Investing for Tomorrow (LIFT) Summer Internship Program. The Virgin Islands Department of Labor’s, Labor Investing for Tomorrow (LIFT) Summer Internship Program was established in 1989. Serving as one of the most prominent work experience/internship programs in the territory, the Labor Investing for Tomorrow is a component of the Summer Youth Work Experience Program (SYWEP) that provides college juniors and seniors with eight (8) weeks of work experience.

In 2021, forty-four (44) interns participated in this highly selective program; obtaining hands-on experience in their fields of interest, interns also participated in workshops, radio appearances, competitions, and an in-person meet and greets with former LIFT Interns. Now in its thirty-third (33rd) year, the LIFT program continues to deliver on the promise of exposing interns to the workforce in the Virgin Islands, motivating them to stay or return home. 2021 LIFT Intern, Mahlana Graham expressed that, “the LIFT program has given me an opportunity to receive real life experience in my future career as a Wildlife Biologist. Working at the Department of Planning and Natural Resources (DPNR) for the summer has shown me where I am currently, and what steps are needed to take me where I’m going”.
LIFT Interns will be paid by the hour and expected to work no more than 35 hours per week for approximately 8 weeks. All LIFT interns will be required to participate in a special project, a mentorship initiative, and community service activities. Additionally, all participants in the program are provided with Life Skills Management & Career Orientation Workshops, Workplace Preparation Skills, and Occupational Safety & Health Regulation (OSHA) training. “For over three decades we have seen how this specific program gives these young professionals an opportunity to experience the vibrant Virgin Islands workforce and achieve employment training as well as showcasing their innovations as future movers and shakers.”, VIDOL Commissioner Molloy.

Eligibility criteria are as follows: Interns must presently be a college junior, senior or a graduate student; must have a minimum GPA of 2.80 on a 4.00 scale; and must be between the ages of 18 – 25, inclusive. Application deadline is March 31, 2022.
